This shot is one of my favorites of my wife’s work - a huge copy of it printed on canvas actually hangs on our dining room wall.
This is an abandoned amusement park complex right in the middle of a freeway, the Rio-Santos, near Coroa Grande, Rio de Janeiro.
It was called Cidade Albanoel, idealized by a politician, Albano Reis, who used to dress up as Santa Claus during Christmas.
Ever since I drove past it on the way to Paraty, 3 years ago, I’ve been longing to go there. I discovered it’s history: Mr. Reis wanted to make this complex, with amusement parks, hotels, restaurants, a country city etc, even a replica of the Christ The Redeemer statue, in a giant piece of land. Everything was being built, going well, untill he was run over by a car and died - accident which has never been really solved.
So, since 2004, it has been decaying. And drawing the attention of everyone who passes by.
